Overcoming Internal Ageism

Hello, friends!

Having added Offerings to the Achievements-Desires-Takeaways format it is now A-D-T-O – which is pronounceable – making what I’ve created here an official acronym! I am pronouncing it “ADD-TO”.

Let’s  ADTO…

🏆 Achievements

Now that I have committed to doing a weekly newsletter, what I’ll be saying in the upcoming one is often on my mind. Over the weekend I was, just for fun, writing and messing around in Canva and I ended up creating another Tracker – this one to keep me on task with all things Choose Your Life Coaching related.

“Well,” I think, “now that’s something to share about.”

So I picked up the phone to take a picture of the creation process. But the camera was on video AND it was pointed at me. So I went with it and started talking EVEN THOUGH I was not at all in favor of how I looked – on a Saturday afternoon when screentime hadn’t been prepared for.

There are micro-Achievements within this worth mentioning…

🙌   Not letting how I looked get in the way of saying what I wanted to say
🙌   Staying with the idea until it turned into something
🙌   Using what it turned into in this newsletter!

🙏 Desires

I desire to model myself after Ruth Gordon in the movie Harold and Maude. To me this means the freedom of sincerely caring less and less about external looks in favor of internal energy.

More of that orientation to life, please!
🌈 Takeaways

You can run but you cannot hide from what the aging process does to a face.

Therefore, the smartest thing to do is, yes, by all means care about how I present myself to the world, but temper that with challenging myself to share the less-than-perfectly-curated as well.

The benefits of doing this are…

✨ When people DO see I look somewhere in the vicinity of my actual aging age (and inevitably they will no matter how much I do to mask it), there will be less stunned surprise. Which all just lives in my imagination, anyway, so…

✨ With that inhibiting concern put to rest, I am free to do what I MOST want to do at this stage of my life: Put myself out there just as I am! So I can share from my wealth of accumulated knowledge! And do it all in the style of Ruth Gordon’s Maude!!

🎁 Offerings

Here are some inspiring Maude one-liners and life affirming quotations from Harold and Maude…

“Vice, Virtue. It’s best not to be too moral. You cheat yourself out of too much life. Aim above morality. If you apply that to life, then you’re bound to live life fully.”

“I should like to change into a sunflower most of all. They’re so tall and simple.” 🌻

Consistency is not really a human trait.”

“A lot of people enjoy being dead. But they are not dead, really. They’re just backing away from life. Reach out. Take a chance. Get hurt even. But play as well as you can. Go team, go! Give me an L. Give me an I. Give me a V. Give me an E. L-I-V-E. LIVE! Otherwise, you got nothing to talk about in the locker room.”

– Maude: Harold, *everyone* has the right to make an ass out of themselves. You just can’t let the world judge you too much.
– Harold: You sure have a way with people.
– Maude: Well, they’re my species!

With ❤️,
Jeanne

P.S.  If it’s been a while since you’ve seen Harold and Maude, you can stream it on Paramount Plus.
